A 63-year-old sailor is attempting to sail alone making an effort to become the only second Welshman to sail around the world without stopping.

Dafydd Hughes is a 63-year-old from Talybont who is participating in the 2023 Global Solo Challenge, a round-the-world sailing race.

The race begins at A Corua, Spain, and sailors must cruise east, passing between Antarctica and the southernmost capes of South Africa, Australia, and South America.

He had already departed Aberystwyth Marina after years spent planning.

“It’s just a challenge I fell in love with two-and-a-half years ago,” he stated to BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

“It’s just a challenge I fell in love with two-and-a-half years ago,” he explained to BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

Mr. Hughes confessed that the task was “quite a challenge,” with just roughly 180 individuals having completed it so far.

Completing the voyage would place him in the footsteps of Alex Thomson, of Bangor, Gwynedd, who became the fastest British person to sail alone, nonstop, and unaided around the world in 2017.

Mr. Thomson finished his voyage in slightly over 75 days.

Before his departure, Mr. Hughes stated that he had prioritized getting the boat ready over his fitness, saying, “I’ve been concentrating on the boat’s systems.”

“Making sure I have food for 200 days, IT systems, making sure they work.”

After 20 years on dry ground, Mr. Hughes’ yacht, Bendigedig, which means amazing in Welsh, returned to the sea in 2022.
