India’s UPI network expands to 4.5 million merchants in Cambodia

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now officially accepted across Cambodia by merchants utilizing QR code payment systems, according to an announcement by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Under this new framework, Indian tourists traveling in Cambodia can seamlessly execute digital transactions with more than 4.5 million merchants registered under KHQR, Cambodia’s national QR code standard, directly through their existing UPI mobile applications.

This rollout represents the initial phase of a strategic cross-border collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Cambodia’s Acleda Bank. A reciprocal system enabling Cambodian travelers to scan and pay via UPI QR codes at merchant locations across India is currently slated for deployment during the project’s second phase. Through this initiative, the RBI aims to significantly lower Indian travelers’ reliance on physical cash while providing a highly efficient alternative to traditional credit and debit card transactions.
