Fragile Middle East Truce Nears Collapse as U.S.-Iran Hostilities Flammage in the Gulf

A precarious month-old truce in the Middle East is on the verge of collapse following direct military engagements between U.S. and Iranian forces in the Gulf. Tensions spiked on Tuesday as both nations vied for control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime artery that has remained largely impassable since the outbreak of hostilities between the U.S., Israel, and Iran in February.

The U.S. military launched “Project Freedom,” an operation led by President Donald Trump to escort stranded tankers through the waterway. During these maneuvers, U.S. forces reported destroying six Iranian small boats, along with several drones and cruise missiles. In retaliation, Iran claimed to have fired warning shots at a U.S. warship and launched missile attacks on the United Arab Emirates, striking the vital oil port of Fujairah. The UAE has condemned these strikes as a major escalation, particularly as Iran released a map claiming expanded maritime control over sections of the Emirati coastline.

The strategic stakes are immense, as the closure of the strait has already triggered global spikes in the prices of oil, fertilizer, and other essential commodities. While the U.S. maintains that some merchant ships have successfully transited with naval protection, Iran has effectively fortified the passage using mines and fast-attack craft. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that the U.S. and UAE are entering a “quagmire,” even as he noted that mediation efforts led by Pakistan are technically ongoing.

Diplomatic efforts remains stalled despite the high human and economic toll of the conflict. While a 14-point Iranian proposal is currently being reviewed, President Trump has indicated a likely rejection, as the plan defers critical discussions on Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence suggests that despite the ongoing air campaign, Iran’s nuclear infrastructure has sustained only limited damage, leaving the primary objectives of the U.S.-Israeli strikes unfulfilled as the regional security situation deteriorates.
