South Africa’s Business Sentiment Declines as Global Tensions Weigh on Economy

South Africa’s business confidence has slipped to a five-month low, reflecting growing economic uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their ripple effects on global markets.

According to the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Business Confidence Index fell to 131.3 in March, down from 134.6 in February. The decline highlights mounting pressure on companies as external shocks begin to filter into domestic economic conditions.

A key driver behind the weakening sentiment is the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has contributed to a softer rand, declining share prices, and slower trade activity. These factors have combined to dampen confidence across multiple sectors, particularly those sensitive to global demand and currency volatility.

Businesses have also raised concerns about rising energy costs and supply uncertainties, as the conflict disrupts global fuel markets. These pressures are beginning to affect operational costs and planning, adding to the cautious outlook among firms.

The slowdown is already evident in real economic indicators, including weaker retail trade and reduced export volumes. While some sectors—such as tourism and vehicle sales—have shown resilience, their gains have not been sufficient to offset broader declines in sentiment.

Despite the recent dip, underlying conditions remain relatively stable compared to earlier periods. A rebound in confidence late last year and moderating inflation have provided some cushion against the current external shocks. However, the outlook for 2026 growth may now face downward revisions if global uncertainties persist.

The latest figures underscore how global geopolitical developments continue to shape domestic economic performance, with South African businesses navigating a more volatile and unpredictable operating environment.
