Saudi Telecom Company secures $800m telecommunications infrastructure project in Syria

Saudi Telecom Company (stc) announced on Sunday that it has secured a telecommunications infrastructure contract in Syria valued at 3 billion Saudi riyals ($800 million) after winning a competitive bidding process.

The initiative, called Silklink, will be developed in collaboration with the Syrian Sovereign Fund, with stc holding a 75% stake and the fund owning the remaining 25%, according to a stock exchange filing.

The project is designed to modernise Syria’s telecommunications backbone by installing a fibre-optic network spanning more than 4,500 kilometres, as well as building data centres and international submarine cable landing stations.

Once completed, the infrastructure is expected to boost data transmission capacity and enhance network stability, allowing telecom providers in Syria and nearby markets to deliver advanced communication services. It will also support digital solutions, cloud computing, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, while improving overall internet performance and strengthening the country’s digital ecosystem.

stc said the project will enhance Syria’s connectivity with regional and global digital networks, linking the country to key data corridors across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.

The company did not provide details on the construction schedule or expected completion timeline.
