Britain’s data privacy regulator has opened a formal investigation into Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok, over how it handles personal data and concerns that it may generate harmful sexualised images and videos.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said the investigation covers xAI and X Internet Unlimited Company, the Dublin-based entity responsible for X’s data control across the European Union and European Economic Area. The move follows reports that Grok had been used to create non-consensual sexual content involving individuals, including minors.
The ICO said the creation and spread of such material raises serious issues under UK data protection laws and could pose significant risks to the public.
Meanwhile, the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom confirmed it will continue its separate probe into X, as authorities worldwide increase scrutiny of sexually explicit content allegedly produced using Grok.
