‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ crosses $1bn mark at global box office

James Cameron’s science-fiction epic “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the director’s fourth film to achieve that milestone.

The latest installment, which transports audiences back to the visually rich world of Pandora, has generated about $1.03 billion in worldwide ticket sales, Walt Disney Studios said on Sunday. “Fire and Ash” is the third film in the Avatar franchise, which has now amassed roughly $6.35 billion in global box office revenue. The story continues from “Avatar: The Way of Water,” following Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) as they cope with the death of their son.

“These films consistently bring people back to cinemas,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, noting that the visually immersive 3D format is particularly suited to the big screen.

The original “Avatar,” released in 2009, earned about $2.9 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing film of all time in nominal terms, though it trails “Gone With the Wind” when adjusted for inflation. Thirteen years later, “Avatar: The Way of Water” debuted in 2022, collecting more than $2.3 billion globally and winning the Academy Award for best visual effects.

Released during the holiday season, “Fire and Ash” has so far taken in $306 million in the U.S. and Canada and $777.1 million overseas, Disney said. Cameron’s first film to surpass $1 billion was “Titanic,” released in 1997, which went on to earn nearly $2.3 billion worldwide.
