Time names AI pioneers as its ‘Person of the Year’

NEW YORK, Dec 11 – Time magazine on Thursday named the creators behind artificial intelligence as its “Person of the Year,” highlighting their role in ushering in an era of thinking machines powered by transformative technology.

“Person of the Year is a powerful way to draw global attention to the people who shape our lives. And this year, no group has had a greater impact than those who envisioned, designed and built AI,” Time Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs wrote in a letter to readers.

The 2025 Person of the Year edition features a cover story examining how AI reshaped the world over the past year in ways that were both groundbreaking and, at times, unsettling. It includes interviews with Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, whose chips are central to the AI surge, as well as prominent AI backers such as SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son.

The issue also delves into darker concerns surrounding the technology, including the death of a 16-year-old in California whose parents have sued ChatGPT creator OpenAI, alleging the company bore responsibility due to conversations their son had with the chatbot.

Time is among several media organisations collaborating with AI companies to license content and develop new tools. In June 2024, it signed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI granting the firm access to its archive, with ChatGPT responses citing and linking back to Time.com.

Previously, Time named Donald Trump as Person of the Year in 2016 and again in 2024, alongside past honourees such as pop star Taylor Swift, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Tesla chief executive Elon Musk.
