One Battle After Another tops Golden Globe nominations in Hollywood

Dark comedy One Battle After Another led the Golden Globe nominations on Monday with nine nods, positioning the Leonardo DiCaprio–starring thriller as an early frontrunner on the path to the Oscars.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film features DiCaprio as a former revolutionary who springs back into action when his daughter is threatened. The Warner Bros production will compete in the best musical or comedy category against titles such as Marty Supreme and Bugonia. Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value followed closely with eight nominations, while supernatural horror film Sinners earned seven. Both will vie for best drama alongside Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Hamnet, a story centered on Shakespeare’s family.

Frankenstein is a film I have long dreamed of making, and having it received this way means a great deal,” del Toro said in a statement.

Acting nominees include DiCaprio and his One Battle co-stars Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor, who said she was “speechless and teary-eyed” over the recognition. George Clooney and Adam Sandler were nominated for Jay Kelly, while Dwayne Johnson received a nod for The Smashing Machine and Jessie Buckley for Hamnet.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo picked up nominations for their performances in Wicked: For Good, though the second installment of the Wizard of Oz prequel did not secure a spot in the musical or comedy category.

As one of the first major award shows ahead of the Oscars in March, the Golden Globes will air on January 11. This year’s voting body—international entertainment journalists—showed strong enthusiasm for films produced beyond Hollywood, said Debra Birnbaum of Gold Derby.

In addition to Sentimental Value, revenge drama It Was Just an Accident by Iranian director Jafar Panahi and Brazilian film The Secret Agent also secured major nominations. “The biggest surprise is the strong showing from international films,” Birnbaum said. “These are the movies to watch throughout awards season.”

A new podcast category debuted this year, with nominations for Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, The Mel Robbins Podcast, Smartless and NPR’s Up First.

In television, HBO’s vacation mystery The White Lotus led with six nominations, followed by Netflix’s limited series Adolescence, centered on a 13-year-old accused of murder.

Netflix topped all networks with 22 TV nominations as it pursues major acquisitions—including HBO—from Warner Bros Discovery, which itself received a hostile takeover bid from Paramount Skydance on Monday.

Neon, the independent distributor behind Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent, led all film studios with 21 nominations.

More than 300 entertainment journalists select the Globe winners—a far smaller group than the roughly 9,000 who vote on the Oscars. The Globes’ membership has expanded in recent years following criticism over ethics and lack of diversity.

Comedian Nikki Glaser will return as host, with the ceremony airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
