Disney’s animation blockbuster Zootopia 2 has generated unprecedented box-office success in China, with cinemas across the country packed as ticket sales surge over the weekend, according to local reports.
On one Saturday alone the film’s box-office take reportedly exceeded 700 million yuan, a figure that helped push its projected total gross in China to about 4.263 billion yuan. Several cinemas scheduled multiple showings, even offering late-night screenings to accommodate the rush of audience demand. The enthusiastic reception has led some theatre managers to compare the atmosphere to that typically seen during the Spring Festival holiday.
The film has earned strong audience appreciation, receiving an 8.5 out of 10 rating on the Chinese review platform Douban. Many viewers described the mood in cinemas as festive, with some even dressing up as characters from the film.
By late Saturday evening, the cumulative box office for Zootopia 2 had already surpassed 1.4 billion yuan. At its current pace, the film is on track to become the second-highest grossing imported movie in the Chinese market, potentially challenging records previously held by major Hollywood imports.
According to ticketing data, on Saturday Zootopia 2 captured a dominant 77.9 percent share of all screenings and accounted for approximately 94.9 percent of total box-office revenue for the day — an exceptional performance for any film in the current market.
With growing momentum and sustained audience interest, Zootopia 2’s success highlights the continued strength of theatrical movie-going in China, even as global entertainment platforms evolve, and underscores the enduring appeal of well made animation among Chinese viewers.
