EU Set to Open Antitrust Probe into Meta Over AI Integration in WhatsApp

The European Union is preparing to launch an antitrust investigation into Meta Platforms concerning the company’s use of artificial intelligence within WhatsApp, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Regulators intend to assess whether Meta’s integration of its artificial intelligence assistant into the messaging service could create unfair competitive conditions. Authorities are expected to review how the technology was incorporated into WhatsApp earlier in the year and whether the move may limit opportunities for rival artificial intelligence developers.

The anticipated inquiry reflects growing concern among European policymakers regarding the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence functionalities across major digital platforms. Officials are examining whether the consolidation of communication services with proprietary artificial intelligence tools could restrict consumer choice or distort market competition.

Neither Meta nor the European Commission has provided public comment on the expected investigation. The Commission has also not confirmed when a formal announcement will be made.

This upcoming action follows increased regulatory scrutiny in several European markets. Earlier in the year, competition authorities in Italy expanded an ongoing review of Meta to include updated terms for WhatsApp Business and broader questions surrounding the company’s deployment of artificial intelligence features across its services.
