Huawei and ZTE Land Multi-Million Dollar 5G Deals in Vietnam as Hanoi Draws Closer to Beijing

Huawei and ZTE have obtained several significant fifth generation network supply agreements in Vietnam, marking a notable shift in the country’s approach to telecommunications procurement and reflecting a period of improving relations with China. The new contracts arrive at a time when Vietnam is navigating increased trade pressure from the United States, including recent tariffs targeting key Vietnamese exports.

Earlier this year, a consortium featuring Huawei won a contract valued at approximately twenty three million United States dollars to supply fifth generation equipment to a state owned operator. Shortly after, ZTE concluded two additional agreements worth more than twenty million United States dollars combined, involving the delivery of antennas and other network components to major Vietnamese carriers. These deals come despite Vietnam’s long standing caution regarding the inclusion of Chinese technology in its critical communications systems.

For many years Vietnam relied heavily on suppliers from Europe for its most sensitive network infrastructure, particularly companies based in Sweden and Finland. While core network contracts continue to favor those firms, state owned operators have recently begun awarding smaller but strategically important tenders to Chinese vendors. Analysts view this as an indication that Vietnam is increasingly open to diversifying its supply chains as its economic landscape shifts.

The timing of these contracts has drawn significant attention. Some observers believe that the new United States tariffs have indirectly encouraged closer cooperation between Hanoi and Beijing, leading Vietnamese operators to consider lower cost Chinese technology as an attractive alternative. Western officials have expressed concern that the growing presence of Chinese suppliers in regional network infrastructure may introduce additional security risks and reduce the resilience of strategic communication systems.

Despite these concerns, neither Huawei, nor ZTE, nor the Vietnamese government has offered detailed public comment on the agreements. Industry specialists note that the deals represent a meaningful step for China’s technology sector in Southeast Asia and may signal further expansion of Chinese influence in the region’s digital infrastructure. As Vietnam continues balancing relationships with major global powers, its decisions in the telecommunications sector are expected to remain a focal point of international attention.
