Indonesians can now use their national standard QR to make payments in Japan.

Indonesia and Japan have launched a new QR code payment system, allowing Indonesians to use their QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) to pay at Japanese merchants that support JPQR.

The new payment connectivity, which began on August 17, 2025, is expected to make transactions between the two countries more dynamic. This initiative also supports the existing local currency transaction (LCT) cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, established in 2019. The LCT framework allows for trade and investment to be settled in rupiah or yen, which helps reduce foreign exchange conversion costs by eliminating the need for a third-party currency.
