22 Chinese fighters cross the Taiwan Strait middle line as Taiwan scrambles its jets.

According to the island's defence ministry, Taiwan sent out jets on Wednesday to warn off 27 Chinese aircraft that were in its air defence zone. As tensions between the two countries grew, 22 of those aircraft breached the median line between the two countries.

TAIPEI, Aug 3; 7:54 PM (Reuters)- In response to escalating tensions, Taiwan sent out jets on Wednesday to warn off 27 Chinese aircraft in its air defense zone. The defense ministry of the island added that 22 of those aircraft violated the median line separating China and the self-ruled island. China's anger over Nancy Pelosi's visit, the highest-level American official to visit the island in 25 years, was shown by a flurry of military exercises surrounding Taiwan, the summoning of the American ambassador to Beijing, and the suspension of several agricultural imports from the island.

In response to the most recent escalation in hostilities across the delicate Taiwan Strait, it claimed to have sent aircraft and missile systems into China's air defense identification zone, or ADIZ, to "watch" those actions. Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, has complained in recent years about frequent air force flights by China close to the democratically-run island, frequently in the south-western region of ADIZ.

According to Taiwan's defense ministry, 16 Chinese Su-30 fighters and 11 additional aircraft were used in the most recent Chinese operation. The 22 jets that crossed the median line did not fly too deep into the unofficial buffer from the Chinese side, according to Taiwan's security strategy. Usually, neither side's aircraft crosses the median, says the source.

A senior defense official referred to Taiwan's announcement earlier on Wednesday that part of China's military drills this week would occur within Taiwan's 12-nautical-mile airspace and oceans as "amounting to a sea and air blockade of Taiwan" as an unprecedented action. To compel the island to submit to Chinese sovereignty, China has increased military and political pressure. Taiwan declared that it would defend itself and opposed China's claims to the island.
